What to do if you've been in an accident:

  1. Check to see if anyone involved in the accident is hurt. If there are injuries, call 911 immediately to request medical assistance.
  2. If possible, move your car to a safe location, especially if it's blocking traffic. However, do not leave the scene of the accident.
  3. Call the police and report the accident. They will send an officer to the scene if necessary. Obtain the police report number, officer's name, and badge number.
  4. Collect the names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, and email addresses of the other driver(s), all vehicle occupants, and any witnesses. Exchange insurance information with others involved. Also, note down the location of the incident.
  5. Take photos of the accident scene, including all vehicles involved and their license plate numbers. These photos can be valuable for insurance claims.
